Don’t Do Beggin’ Strips!!!

From our friends at Parker’s in Chicago, here’s a bit of information on WHY your dog should not be Beggin’ for Beggin’ Strips! A great read, well written & on point!

“Since we highlighted an unfortunate food with cute packaging, let’s take a look at some popular treats with cute packaging, but bad ingredients:

Beggin’ Strips Original Bacon Flavor:6952_523107884373725_1238473704_n
Ground wheat, corn gluten meal, wheat flour, ground yellow corn, water, sugar, glycerin, meathydrogenated starch hydrolysate, soybean meal, bacon fat preserved with BHA, salt, sorbic acid (a preservative), artificial smoke flavorcalcium propionate (a preservative), glyceryl monostearate, phosphoric acid, choline chloride, added color (red 40, blue 1, yellow 5, yellow 6).

I highlighted the scary ingredients.  Corn gluten meal and ground yellow corn are not biologically appropriate ingredients- they are common allergens and are unnecessary in pet food or treats.  Corn is simply sugar, something your dog doesn’t need in it’s diet.  Sugar is also completely unnecessary in a pet treat- dogs have no biological need for sugar.  The ingredient “meat” is especially scary.  What kind of meat??  It could be anything!  Hydrogenated Starch Hydrosylate is just another form of sugar.  Soybeans, like corn, are not a natural part of a dogs’ diet and do not have any place in pet food.  Bacon fat itself is not a terrible ingredient, it’s the preservative- BHA.  BHA is a preservative that has shown to have negative side effects, including being carcinogenic.  It’s inexpensive, which is why lower quality foods and treats use it. Salt is another unnecessary ingredient.  It’s just used here as a flavor enhancer.  Artifical smoke flavor includes MSG, which is a common allergen, plus has been shown to have negative side effects.  Calcium propionate is considered “slightly toxic” and is yet ANOTHER preservative. Colorants are also completely unnecessary in pet food and treats- dogs can’t see that Beggin’ Strips are supposed to be bacon colored!  Added colors just cause tear stains and are thought to cause hyperactivity, amongst other things.

So, what do we have that is bacon flavored but with not so scary ingredients?

New Item: Bakery Treats For YOUR Pups!

We got these in just before Valentines Day (Thanks, snow storms) and they’ve been a great hit already. The truffles don’t taste too bad as well, we’ve tried a couple of them!

The truffles are made from Carob, and the cookies do have some wheat in them. So if you’re trying to avoid the wheat, they’re not going to be ideal. Priced well from $.99 to $2.69 and more will be in March for St. Patricks Day!
